Her Current Season
Charismatic and captivating Alaska-born mezzo-soprano VIVICA GENAUX is consistently praised for her extraordinary performances on the world’s great musical stages, not only for the technical command and beauty of her distinctive voice, but also for her compelling character portrayals. She is repeatedly hailed as one of the foremost interpreters of Baroque and bel canto music and her interest in and performances of this repertoire is constantly expanding.
Ms. Genaux continues to balance her appearances in the U.S. and abroad with
operatic engagements, concerts and recitals in new venues and countries, as
well as returns to sites of previous audience and critical triumphs. She adds
three additional characters to her pantheon, one each by Handel, Hasse and
Haydn. She also completes a recording and performs that same Vivaldi character,
Antiope in the composer’s Ercole, on stage
for the first time. Her roles now total forty-one, twenty-five of which are
trouser-parts.
The 2008-09 season commences with one of three New York area performances, at Tannery Pond Concerts in the Berkshires, in a recital paired with longtime confrere Craig Rutenberg. This is followed by a debut appearance, at the Festival de Fénétrange, for a Baroque bill with Concerto Köln. For her initial engagement at Vienna’s Theater an der Wien, Ms. Genaux switches male attire and roles from her more usual eponymous hero to the villain, Polinesso, in Ariodante, with Christophe Rousset and Les Talens Lyriques. In a return to Madrid’s Teatro Real she performs Il Piacere in a staged version of the Handel oratorio Il Trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno, conducted by Paul McCreesh, their premier collaboration. Another role and festival debut awaits at the Ludwigsburger Schlossfestspiele in a Hasse rarity, Sanctus Petrus et Sancta Maria Magdalena, coupled with the composer’s Miserere in D minor, with Michael Hofstetter at the helm. Rejoining Concerto Köln, she concertizes in Cologne, Lyon and Saarbrücken prior to embarking on another recording project, for Virgin Classics, her seventh for the label.
As 2009 begins, Ms. Genaux, singing the role of Antiope, completes a Virgin Classics recording of Vivaldi’s Ercole sul Termodonte at studios in Florence with Fabio Biondi/Europa Galante. Back in the States, for her second New York area appearance of the season she performs a concert with Andrea Marcon and members of the Venice Baroque Orchestra at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall. She sings Ercole at Vienna’s Konzerthaus and then at Paris’ Théâtre des Champs-Élysées with the team of Biondi/Europa Galante. She performs one of her calling-card roles, Isabella in L’italiana in Algeri, both at Torino’s Teatro Regio (a Company debut) and at the Pittsburgh Opera. Sandwiched in between these two engagements is her initial performance in Russia, at Moscow’s Tchaikovsky Concert Hall, with frequent recital partner Carlos de Aragon conducting the Musica Viva Orchestra. Rejoining Concerto Köln, she intones her first notes in Brazil and Argentina with concert dates in São Paulo and Buenos Aires. One more Festival debut awaits her in France, in St. Denis, with a program which includes Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater and Handel’s Il pianto di Maria, in which she is paired once more with Maestro Rousset and Les Talens Lyriques. For her first foray with the music of Haydn, Ms. Genaux assumes the part of Costanza in L’isola disabitata, a new role and orchestra collaboration with Jonathan Nott and the Bamberger Symphoniker Her season comes to a close at New York’s Caramoor Festival, her ninth engagement there, as Arsace in Rossini’s Semiramide, reuniting Ms. Genaux with Will Crutchfield who has been a major force in her career from the beginning.
